What is Eidetic Image Psychology?

Eidetic Image Psychology is a broad term which is used by Ahsen to centrally address important issues concerning the mental image. It is a well-formulated set of principles and a comprehensive theory about the nature, structure and function of the image and the nature of consciousness based on his clinical and experimental work. In an applied process sense, Ahsen’s Eidetic Image Psychology proposes that the image is central to psychological resolution, personal growth, new learning and enlightenment; that in this form it is multisensory, multi-leveled, and experiential; and that it appears in consciousness as a visual Image, a Somatic response and a Meaning (ISM) at one and the same time. Ahsen refers to the ISM as the Triple Code Model of imagery, which is also an aspect of the operational definition of the structural eidetic. All images and thought processes, according to Ahsen, relate meaningfully to the eidetic, but each performs a separate and distinct function in the psyche.

In Eidetic Image Psychology, explorations of the psyche take place at molar levels, as in Freud and Jung. The method works totally through imagery blueprints and aims at demonstration of how different images affect the body, mind and emotions differently. The basis of healing and learning reside in these structures, interventions based on them and on the internal laws of imagery behavior. Eidetic Image Psychology thus embodies what Ahsen calls a true Psychology of the Being and a Consciousness Psychology. Its most widely known application is Eidetic Psychotherapy. It is deeply philosophical, dramatic, literary, spiritual and mythological. On the other side, it is systematic, practical and targeted. It is grounded in research and application of eidetic imagery in particular and imagery in general, with a wider view toward scientific study of the phenomena of consciousness both as visible and invisible, operational and nonoperational, vivid and unvivid, in the process discovering psychic order underneath the apparent chaos.

Eidetic Image Psychology investigates both the structure and content of images, especially significant personal images, and the imagery analysis is then related to the subject’s development and future. It offers potentials for healing and illumination of the mind at many levels as well, with applications to education, sociology, literature, and mythology.
